Can I Exercise While on a Detox Diet?

Often people on Detox diets wonder if they can exercise. The answer generally is that yes, light exercising is encouraged. Keep in mind the first few days of a Detox diet are the most difficult, those are the days in which you will feel the worst in terms of fatigue, headaches, nausea and even depression. After three days have gone by, you very well may feel more up to exercising. While exercising, make sure to pay careful attention to how you feel. If at any time you feel as though the exercise is too much, either stop or switch to a more gentle form of exercise.

Also if it your first Detox diet, your body may be working harder to eliminate more toxins, so you may feel less like exercising. So again, the usefulness of exercising definitely depends on the individual situation.

In the book “The New Detox Diet” By Elson M. Haas, Daniella Chace, the authors write about the importance of exercise during a Detox program. An ideal form of exercise during a Detox diet would be brisk walking, or swimming. Any exercises that are too rigorous are not recommended. Activities like running a marathon, or weight training are not advised. Remember, during your Detox you are consuming fewer calories. As a result, you should make sure your activities are relaxing and supportive of the detoxification process.

Yoga is another form of exercise that is ideal during the detoxification process. The yoga poses actually assist the process of detoxification in and of themselves. Also the relaxation yoga offers will benefit the mind, body and spirit during a detoxification diet. Because yoga stretches the body, it facilitates the removal of waste from the body. The breathing in yoga also benefits us by releasing carbon dioxide from the lungs and stimulating the organs to help us process our food.

During the Detox process it is important in general to not overdo exercising. Since you are eating fewer calories, the exercising shouldn’t be strenuous. Always monitor carefully how you are feeling during activities. If you find you are feeling nauseous or lightheaded, you should immediately stop physical activities.
