Besides this is not something that she does all the time. Does that story ring familiar? Well then here are some doable, practical ways of beating the urge to nibble on those comfort foods.
The dictionary defines comfort foods as foodstuffs that many people turn to comfort food for familiarity, emotional security, or as a special reward.
It has often been said that these foods are associated with pleasant childhood experiences and grown ups reach out such foods for reliving those pleasant experiences associated with the food. Some common characteristics of comfort foods are that they are simple to make (usually), and rich in carbohydrates and sugars.
There are many reasons for combating these cravings. The most important being that it can lead to a condition commonly known as emotional eating. This will lead to further, more serious conditions like extreme weight gain and depression.
Taking your mind off that momentary urge to indulge is a great way of making it go away. It is an established fact that the life of most cravings does not go beyond quarter of an hour. So, if one can successfully divert one’s focus during that period the craving diminishes significantly. In fact, most of the time you will find that you have almost forgotten about it.
Drinking water is also useful. This is because we often mistake thirst for hunger. So, the next time you crave something try drinking a little water. If this satiates your craving then you know that you were actually thirsty and not hungry.
Some people have come out with a theory that proposes that since indulging in comfort foods gives us a luxurious feeling, having a luxurious bath soothes the senses and results in the craving getting diminished.
Some researchers have pointed out that though there are several reasons for our cravings. There is an undeniable relation between chronic stress and continued sweet craving. In that case the best thing to do would be to exercise regularly and make changes in one’s regular work schedule that would take care of stress.
Another school of thought is that do not deprive yourself if you have craving. Rather, restrict your intake. Though this a very sensible take on the issue yet, seems an extremely uphill task for most people who are affected by this problem. So, here is a step by step approach that can be tailored to suit just about anybody.
1.Why do you have these cravings? That’s the first question to be answered. Is it because you’re bored or anxious or because it is a habitual reaction.
2.The next step is to observe if this particular craving happens at a certain time or is linked with a certain activity. For instance some of us feel like munching on a little something when we are watching television.
Once you have answered these questions the solutions become evident. Just change your activities around for a more fit and healthier you!
