Effects of Bulimia – Nasty Teeth

Is there any wonder that after a period of time, many times years long, that one of the effects of bulimia is nasty teeth?

While bulimia is normally characterized in two ways, purging or using laxatives, this article deals with bulimics who purge.

Purging is another way of saying vomiting.

Those with bulimia may put their fingers or other items in their mouths to induce vomiting or they may be able to make themselves “gag” with a visual in their mind, but all have one thing in common. The acid is being introduced into the esophagus and mouth from the stomach.

This practice of bringing acid back into the mouth over a period of time will ruin tooth enamel and introduce tooth decay to teeth that are being attacked with the acid from the stomach. Tooth enamel is one substance that the body cannot regenerate. The only way to get it back is with comprehensive dental care. When you practice bulimic behavior by purging, your teeth can become susceptible to crumbling, fracturing, decay, and even falling out.

Because of the stripping away of dental enamel, the teeth may become more sensitive to food and drink temperatures. Your teeth may also start discoloring the longer acid is introduced into your mouth because of the purging behavior of bulimia.

If you notice after a dental visit that your child’s dental health is degenerating, that may be a tip off to start looking into their routine after mealtimes.

Is your child heading for the bathroom immediately after eating? Are there strange noises coming from the bathroom? If you address the issue, do you get a good feeling with the answers you are getting?

Dental decay is only ONE of the effects of bulimia, but believe me, there are many more that can and will affect their general health.
