How to Get the Most out of Christian Counseling

Many Americans that are dealing with struggles and challenges in their lives will choose to see a Christian counselor in hopes of helping the recovery process. Counselors help clients by looking at situations from a different perspective than the client can and by providing sound advice on how to handle the situation. Christian counselors differ from secular counselors because their guidance is based on Scripture and its teachings.

If you are currently seeing a Christian counselor or considering doing so in the future, here are some things that you can do to get the most out of the experience.

1. Be Consistent

The first thing you must do to get something out of your time is to be consistent. Every situation is different, but generally the counselor will suggest seeing the client for several appointments, usually at a certain time interval. If you want to get the most out of these appointments, be consistent in seeing the counselor and don’t go for long periods of time without seeing the counselor. This will give you the best chance to implement the advice that is being given and to see real results.

2. Pray on Your Own

Christian counselors typically emphasize the importance of prayer with their clients. Whether you are in session with the counselor or on your own facing a difficult situation, make prayer a part of your life and ask for God’s help in properly dealing with the issues that you are facing.

3. Be Open and Willing to Change

Many of us go to counseling with the attitude that other people are the cause of all of our pain and they are the ones that need to change. Regardless of who is at fault, we can always improve our situation be being willing to change ourselves if needed. Focusing inwards on ourselves rather than outwards on other people will lead to a more healthy attitude about the situations, and we will actually be able to make some progress.

4. Listen to What the Counselor Has to Say

While most counselors will prefer to let the clients do the bulk of the talking, as a client you should be willing to listen to what the counselor is telling you and have an open mind to it. Avoid the temptation to go into the counseling with the attitude of knowing what the solution to the problem must be. Get the advice of the counselor and really listen to what he/she is telling you.

5. Focus on What is Withing Your Control

Everyone faces challenges, difficulties, struggles and frustrations that are outside of our own control. Avoid the temptation to dwell on these things that you cannot change and place your emphasis on improving yourself and working on the things that you can control. When this is the case your overall attitude will improve and you’ll find that you are impacted less by the things that you cannot control.
