Obesity is spreading to parts of the world that once worried about enough to eat. The health risks are enormous. Today’s way of life is less physically active than it used to be. Before our grandparents used to do all the households chores themselves but today everything is done by machine. People travel by buses or cars rather than walking. Even to go to the market nearby, people go by car.
Each week headlines are filled with its epidemics. In most of the countries around the world the government, especially the ministry of health is really concerned with that new-born tyrannosaur which is slowly swallowing the health of our healthy population. The problems is that we are putting emphasis on the symptoms only, forgetting the roots. Obesity is when a person is carrying too much fat for the height and sex. But why is the person overweight? The reasons are very complex-varying from country to country. The problem stems from the collision of modern trends: rising affluence and urbanization, the proliferation of conveniences like cars, computers, fast-food and television. In offices, people sit still most of the day and this means that the calories that they eat are not getting burnt off as energy. Instead the extra calories are stored as fat.
People make an unhealthy food choices. Not enough fruits and vegetable are consumed.People go out to eat frequently. But a generation ago, eating out was rare and life was tough, but they were healthy. But now people around the world are suffering from heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, hypertension. Obesity is becoming a global epidemic.
But should we stand and stare or at least try to do something. Government must impose heavy taxes on fatty food and health warnings must be printed on labels. Advertising on cigarettes and alcoholics drinks should be banned. Concerning children huge massive educational campaign should be launched about how to eat healthy food. Obesity, a global epidemic can be eradicated.
