1. Pain in the Knees, Hips and Back – Joint pain is common in even slightly overweight people. The degeneration of the knee and hip joint is particularly prevalent in obese individuals. The more weight you put on, the more stress you put on your bones and joints. It doesn’t take long for this added stress to start to cause pain and damage to the joints.
Weight loss can greatly reduce the stress on bones and joints and you will find it much easier to move around, walk and run once you’ve lost those pounds. It is important, though, that you take action to lose the weight right away, before permanent damage is done to the joints.
2. Gallstones – the risk of developing gallstones increases with each pound of fat you gain. Studies have shown that women with a BMI (body mass index) of more than 32 are three times more likely to develop gallstones than their slim counterparts. The risk is a whopping seven times higher in women with a BMI higher than 45. And, like many other weight-related diseases, excess abdominal fat is of particular concern with gallstones. High-cholesterol diets can also trigger the development of gallstones, as excess cholesterol in the gallbladder is what forms the stones.
3. Gastro-intestinal problems – gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD,) often called acid reflux is very painful and much more prevalent in overweight people. Even a moderate weight gain can cause or worsen acid reflux problems.
Heartburn, vomiting, chest pain and trouble swallowing are classic symptoms of GERD. By simply losing enough weight to reduce your BMI to normal levels, you can lessen or even cure these painful symptoms.
4. Emotional Pain – Sometimes the most difficult symptom of obesity to live with are the emotional problems caused by being overweight. Compulsive overeating is the uncontrollable urge to eat continuously. This often causes shame and self-loathing after a binge.
Overweight people are very likely to suffer from loneliness, depression and anxiety. Low self-esteem and being overly self-conscious can very seriously hamper your ability to make friends and interact normally with others. People often treat fat people differently than slim and attractive people. Depression is a very common in overweight people and their poor eating habits and lack of exercise makes it even worse.
As you begin to lose weight you will start to look great and often the depression caused by being overweight starts to get better them more you lose.
Being overweight is certainly no fun. It is painful in many different ways. The good news is you CAN lose weight, you will look great and you will be slim and beautiful as soon as you make the decision to make changes in your life and win the battle over your weight.
