Xenical (orlistat) Vs Reductil (sibutramine) – Weight Loss Treatment

Obesity is when a person is carrying too much body fat for their height and sex. A person is considered obese if he has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30.0 or greater or about 30 pounds or more overweight.

In other words, obesity is a condition in which your weight is much more than it should be for your height and in which the percentage of body fat is also considerably in excess.

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children. Obesity is a major public health concern in the UK, where being overweight is now the norm. By 2050 it’s predicted that 60 per cent of the UK population could be obese.

Obesity can cause health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. And it makes some people feel bad about themselves.

The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and exercise. anti-obesity drugs may be taken to supplement this, or in case of failure. Xenical (Orlistat) and Reductil (Sibutramine) are one of the popular weight loss drugs for obesity treatment.

Xenical contains Orlistat as active ingredient manufactured by Roche Laboratories. Xenical is available with dosage of 120mg Orlistat.

Reductil contains Sibutramine (Meridia) as active ingredient manufactured by Knoll Pharmaceutical Co. Reductil is available with dosage of 10mg and 15mg Sibutramine.

Xenical blocks the action of the fat-digesting lipase enzymes in the intestine. It stops around 30 percent of the fat patient have eaten from being absorbed. It simply passes through digestive system and helps to lose weight as a result. Reductil blocks the nerve cells that release and reabsorb serotonin and increases serotonin levels. These act in the brain and enhance feelings of fullness so that patient eat less and consequently lose weight.

Xenical works in stomach, hence the common side effects include loose stools and flatulence. Xenical also interferes with the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins. The most common side effects from Reductil include insomnia, constipation, a dry mouth and small increases in blood pressure.

Xenical, achieved an average weight loss of 10 percent or more of their body weight in one year, compared to those on diet alone. While taking Reductil with a reduced-calorie diet and appropriate physical activity, 77 percent of patients achieved weight loss that benefited their health.

Studies say, Reductil was associated at one year with a 7% reduction in initial weight, and Xenical with a 10% reduction. The studies suggest that there may be limits to the amount of weight that most obese individuals can lose (and maintain) with currently approved medications, as well as with behavioral interventions. This limit appears to be 10% to 15% of initial weight.

Certain patient cannot be prescribed Reductil as it works in neurotransmitters in brain. Patient with anorexia, bulimia, psychiatric issues, heart diseases, blood pressure can not take Reductil. Hence, Xenical can be best option for such patient to lose weight.

It is advisable to consult your GP before choosing your weightloss treatment to get better results and save your self from major side effects.
